Door Construction Explained

Crafted from premium materials like African Mahogany or Knotty Alder, our doors are designed to bring both beauty and durability to your entryway. African Mahogany offers a rich, luxurious grain and high resilience, while Knotty Alder provides a rustic charm with natural knotting, giving each door a unique character. For a touch of sophistication and energy efficiency, our doors feature double-pane, insulated Low-E tempered glass units. This high-quality glass not only enhances the door's aesthetic appeal but also provides exceptional energy savings, safety, and year-round comfort. Every component in our doors is carefully selected for longevity and performance, ensuring that your door is as strong and enduring as it is beautiful.

In a rail and stile construction with a floating panel design, you have a classic, durable door structure that not only adds elegance but also provides stability to your door. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Rails and Stiles: The "rails" are the horizontal components, and the "stiles" are the vertical components that frame the door. These parts form the outer structure, creating a strong, stable frame.

  • Floating Panel: The panel sits within the frame but isn’t glued or rigidly fixed. It’s called a "floating panel" because it has some room to expand and contract within the frame as the weather changes. This flexibility prevents cracking and warping over time, as wood naturally responds to temperature and humidity.

  • Note on Wind-Driven Rain: Since the floating panel is not entirely water-tight, moisture can penetrate through the slight gaps between the panel and frame. In areas exposed to heavy, wind-driven rain, this can allow water to seep in, potentially leading to issues like warping, swelling, or moisture buildup if water becomes trapped. To help prevent this, we recommend installing an overhead covering or porch to reduce direct rain exposure. Additionally, applying weather-resistant finishes and performing regular maintenance can further protect the door, ensuring its lasting beauty and durability.

This design is both traditional and functional, ensuring that your door maintains its structural integrity and beautiful appearance for years. It’s especially valuable in climates with significant temperature swings or humidity, providing lasting durability and style.
