Mahogany (African)
At Grand Entry Doors, we take pride in offering premium African Mahogany doors—a superior alternative to traditional mahoganies. When compared to other mahogany species, African Mahogany, stands out for its versatility, beauty, and sustainability.
Sustainability
One of the most significant advantages of African Mahogany, is its sustainability. The wood used in our doors is harvested in well-managed forests across Africa, where reforestation efforts ensure that this resource is renewable. Traditional mahoganies, particularly those from regions like South America, are often subject to more aggressive deforestation, which has caused supply shortages and environmental concerns. By choosing African Mahogany, you're selecting a product that contributes to global forest preservation and helps reduce the ecological impact of deforestation.
Durability
African Mahogany is known for its resistance to warping, making it an excellent choice for exterior doors. It is remarkably stable and performs well in various weather conditions, reducing the risk of splitting or cracking over time. Traditional mahoganies may require more maintenance and treatments due to their susceptibility to environmental changes, making African Mahogany a lower-maintenance option that still delivers excellent long-term performance.
Density and Hardness
African Mahogany strikes a perfect balance between density and workability. With a medium density, it is easier to work with than denser traditional mahoganies, allowing for intricate craftsmanship and detailing without compromising strength. While traditional mahoganies are known for their hardness, they can be more challenging to work with, especially during installation or customization. African Mahogany's optimal balance of density makes it easier to mill and shape, resulting in a beautiful, detailed finish that retains its structural integrity.
Aesthetic Appeal
Visually, African Mahogany offers a refined, consistent grain pattern, similar to traditional mahogany but with a finer texture. African Mahogany's natural luster enhances its appearance, providing a warm, inviting look that complements various stain finishes. Its versatility makes it an ideal choice for both modern and classic door designs, offering a wide range of stylistic options for homeowners.
In summary, at Grand Entry Doors, we believe African Mahogany is the superior choice over traditional mahoganies. Its sustainability, durability, balanced density, and aesthetic appeal make it the ideal wood for high-quality doors that are built to last while being environmentally responsible.
Knotty Alder
We proudly offer doors crafted from Knotty Alder, a wood prized for its rustic charm, natural durability, and sustainability. Knotty Alder is becoming increasingly popular among homeowners and designers for its unique appearance and reliable performance, making it a standout choice for interior and exterior doors.
Sustainability
Knotty Alder is a highly sustainable wood species. It grows abundantly in North America, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, and is harvested from responsibly managed forests. Its rapid growth rate and availability ensure that using Knotty Alder contributes to eco-friendly practices, promoting forest regeneration and minimizing the environmental footprint.
Durability
Knotty Alder is known for its good durability, making it suitable for both interior and exterior applications. It performs well in varying climates and holds up under everyday wear and tear, making it a practical choice for doors in high-traffic areas. While it is a softer hardwood, Knotty Alder is still strong enough to resist impacts and maintain structural integrity, especially when properly sealed or stained.
Density and Hardness
Knotty Alder is moderately dense. This makes it softer than many other hardwoods, which means it’s easy to work with and mill into detailed designs or custom shapes. Its medium density makes Knotty Alder lightweight compared to denser hardwoods, making installation and customization more straightforward while still maintaining a solid, reliable feel.
Aesthetic Appeal
The most notable feature of Knotty Alder is its distinctive appearance. It features a beautiful, natural grain with visible knots, giving it a rustic and warm appeal that adds character to any space. The wood’s rich, earthy tones range from light honey to reddish-brown, and its open grain pattern allows it to take stain finishes exceptionally well, enhancing its natural beauty. The knots and imperfections of Knotty Alder are not flaws but are instead embraced for the rustic charm they bring to each door, making every piece unique.
In conclusion, Knotty Alder is an ideal choice for those seeking a sustainable, durable, and aesthetically pleasing wood for their doors. At Grand Entry Doors, we’re committed to providing high-quality Knotty Alder doors that enhance the beauty and functionality of your home, offering timeless appeal with natural charm.
Specific Notation About Knotty Alder Wood Doors:
When purchasing a knotty alder door, customers should be aware of the presences of grain variation and natural knots throughout the wood door's surface. These knots are natrual occurences and are not considered a manufacturing defect. We will not replace a knotty alder door if a customer is dissatisfied with the size, placement, number of or depths of knots. If you do not want this type of appearance we recommend purchasing a mahogany door.
- Size and Placement: The variability in size and placement of knots on the door surface is a natural occurrence and adds to the unique charm of the wood. Knots may be found on any part of the door, including panels, stiles, rails, or TDL bars.
- Number of Knots: Knotty alder doors feature a varying number of knots, which are a result of the wood's natural growth patterns. The number of knots can vary from door to door and even within the same door, creating a one-of-a-kind appearance.
- Depth of Knots: Knots on the surface of the door may vary in depth. Some knots might be shallow, while others can be deeper. Deeper knots, if present, will be carefully filled with a black epoxy to ensure both aesthetics and structural integrity.
Natural Variation:
- Variation Not Considered a Defect: The beauty of knotty alder lies in its distinctive grain patterns, color variations, and knots. These characteristics are not considered defects but rather celebrate the authenticity of the wood. We embrace these variations, as they make each door a unique work of art.
- Color Variation: Knotty alder wood naturally exhibits a range of color tones, from light to dark, and may contain streaks or variations in hue. This adds to the rustic and warm appeal of the wood.
- Knot Variation: Knots come in different sizes and shapes. They can be round, oval, irregular, or elongated. These variations contribute to the door's character.
- Grain Patterns: The grain pattern of knotty alder can vary from straight to wavy, enhancing the visual appeal of the door.
Quality Assurance:
- Epoxy Filling: Deeper knots are meticulously filled with a black epoxy to provide structural stability and to maintain the door's overall appearance.
- Cherry Picking Prohibited: We do not allow customers to cherry-pick doors based on knot placement, number, size, or other characteristics.

You are ordering a heavy or oversized item that will be delivered by a freight carrier. Most carriers provide curbside delivery only.
Standard Freight (LTL) Delivery: Your order will be loaded onto a semi-truck and delivered curbside to your home or jobsite; you will be responsible for moving the item from the curb to the desired location. Shipping times will vary based on destination, extreme weather, set delivery schedules to your specific area, and other variables. We utilize a variety of LTL carrier options, and as a result, not all delivery interactions are the same.
Here's what you can generally expect during delivery:
1. Scheduling: Once your shipment is ready for delivery, the carrier will contact you to arrange a delivery date and time window. This allows you to plan for the arrival of your package.
2. Delivery notification: On the day of delivery or shortly before, the carrier may provide a notification to inform you that your shipment is on its way. This notification can be through email, phone call, or text message.
3. Curbside drop-off: When the delivery truck arrives at your location, the driver will typically unload your shipment from the truck and place it on the curbside or the nearest accessible point. This is usually done using a liftgate or pallet jack.
4. Signature or proof of delivery: The carrier may require a signature or proof of delivery to ensure that the package has reached the intended recipient. Make sure to be available or provide instructions for someone else to sign on your behalf if you cannot be present.
5. Unpacking and installation: Curbside delivery includes only the transportation of the package to your location. Unpacking, assembly, or installation of the delivered items is not included.
6. Inspecting the shipment: It is essential to inspect the shipment for any visible damage or discrepancies before signing for it. If there are any concerns, note them on the delivery receipt and inform the carrier immediately. If the crate appears damaged, please do not reject the shipment. We pack and secure the contents inside the crate very well to protect them. Exterior damage to the crate or pallet typically does not result in damage to the contents.
7. Responsibility for moving the shipment: Once the shipment is unloaded at the curbside, it becomes your responsibility to move it into your premises or designated area. This may involve using your own equipment or assistance. Large doors might exceed the capacity of the truck’s lift-gate. In this case, it is the customer's responsibility to unload the doors from the back of the truck. The driver will sometimes assist in removing the product from the truck, but they are not required to do so. Our door units are heavy and therefore we recommend at least 2 people be present at time of delivery. The truck driver might assist with moving it into a location such as a garage, but they are not required to do so.
It's important to note that specific procedures and policies may vary among different carriers and depending on the nature of the shipment. If you have specific requirements or questions about curbside delivery, it's best to communicate directly with the carrier or shipping company to ensure a smooth and satisfactory delivery experience.
