Description

See how your stain actually looks before you commit. These mahogany samples let you test finishes, sheens, and color on the same wood species we use in production, so there are no surprises when your piece arrives.

Each sample measures 3" x 8", large enough to judge grain and undertone in real light. We recommend testing your top two or three finishes side by side, then checking them in both daylight and lamplight before deciding.

What's included:

  • Two mahogany samples, 3" x 8" each
  • Same wood species as our doors

Shipping: Samples ship via UPS in a separate package from your door. They will not arrive together, and each will have its own tracking number.

How to test your stain

For results that accurately reflect your finished door, follow these two steps:

  1. Sand the sample first. Give each piece a light hand sanding with fine 220 grit sandpaper to create a smooth, consistent texture. Rough areas absorb stain more heavily and will read darker than smooth ones.
  2. Match your coat count. If you plan to apply two or three coats to your door, as most stain manufacturers recommend, apply the same number to your sample. Anything less will not show you the true finished color.

About natural variation: Your sample is a small piece of wood. A full door has significantly more surface area and will show natural variation in grain, tone, and texture. Because wood is a natural product, variations in color, texture, grain, or general surface appearance are inherent to the material and are not considered defects. Any variation in wood color must be compensated for through staining technique, which is best handled by a professional finisher.

Please note: Two samples are included per order. Any additional sample requests will be billed separately at the current sample rate.
